Battery Energy Storage Systems were in focus on the Energy Storage 2016 fair in Düsseldorf
Date: 2016.03.15. – 17.
Location: Messegelände - Düsseldorf Germany
International Renewable Energy e.V. (IRE) was invited to participate in the event “Energy Storage 2016” from March 15th to 17th 2016 in Düsseldorf. Mr. Dr.-Ing. Robert Lorenz (Executive director of IRE) took part in the event as the representative of IRE.
From 15th until 17th of March 2016, the leading fair for battery storage systems in Germany took place in Düsseldorf. Mr. Robert Lorenz (PhD) of IRE e.V. participated and received an overview about the current market about battery storage, power2gas, thermal and mechanical storage systems. Over 140 exhibitors showed their products. There were 50% more exhibitors than last year. In total, there were over 3.000 visitors and experts.
The leading companies in energy storage had a booth at the fair. Despite the big number of exhibitors, the size of the fair with two exhibition halls in regards to square meters was not too big.
Interesting companies, who plan and implement battery storagy system projects were:
1.Greensmith from USA, which was founded in 2008 and raised more than US$50 Mio. venture capital. The company cooperates with E.ON and aims to start new projects in Germany in the year of 2016/2017.
2.Younicos from Germany and since 2015 on the market. They conducted a reference project on the Grasiosa Island in Portugal, which produces 100% from renewable energy sources. They cooperated with the local energy utitlity EDA. The installed Europe’s first standalone battery storage project in Europe together with WEMAG in Schwerin (5MW).
3.RES from Great Britain, which are already longer time on the market and started to do industrial battery storage solutions for energy utiltities, municipal utility providers and investors. In Germany, they are in negotiations in nine projects.
4.BELLECTRIC from Germany and since 2001 on the market. Their reference projects include a Energy Buffer Unit (EBU) with a capacity of 2MWh on a solar plant named “Alt Daber” in cooperation with Vattenfall.
5.Deutsche ACCUmotive from Germany, which was founded in 2009 and is the consecutive organization of Li-Tec, which produced battery cells. The headquarter is based in Kamenz. Daimler holds 90% and Evonic 10% of the company shares. The offer energy storagy systems with new batteries or second use batteries, which are also used in cars.
Some interesting battery cell producers were Samsung, Saft and Leclanche. The conference program offered some interesting presentations. On the top of that, in the middle of the exhibition hall each company had the chance to present itself within 10 minutes time. Interestingly, there was no Chinese company present, however RES reported to use batteries from the Chinese manufacturer BYD.
